Can food fix it?
It's just that I wish that food were easier than it is right now. I wish that the act of eating, interacting with food, had the potential of being more neutral than it is. Eating in 2025 is more challenging than it has been ever before, largely because of the manner in which we interact with food and nutrition and wellness information as though it evolves in a rapid fire fashion. Food is wonderful. Nutrition, the science, is very cool. And since you are a human on the planet, right now, it would not surprise me at all if you felt as though nutrition specifics, food obsession, nutrient details, mattered a lot. Because non-fiction nutrition, the shit that is made up for the sake of selling something, is very engaging and exciting and leaves people feeling as though they are uniquely responsible for Health and wellness outcomes. As though food alone, can do that.
It can't. Mostly.
I'm an eating disorder dietitian, and I have built my career supporting humans to heal their relationships with food and body. A big part of that healing includes grieving some of the lies that the diet and wellness industry spin about how we should most ideally care for ourselves with food. Mostly this is elitist and ableist and rooted in the lie that Health is a mandate and is accessible to anyone who simply tries hard enough. This is a convenient lie that is perpetuated repeatedly, everywhere. Social media and your chosen influencers seem to have the magic fixed to the thing that you have been trying to fix for such a time. And what happens when you try that thing and it doesn't work? Your doctors are impacted by the industry in the same way that you are, and perhaps perpetuate unhelpful ideas. Friends and family members and strangers, alike, Love talking about food and sharing what is effective and has worked and what has not been effective. How long ago did you start listening to humans that do not live in your body when it came to decisions about eating? When did you realize that what was being promoted was not in your best interest? And how Long did it take for you to rebuild the trust with your body that was broken when you outsourced your body wisdom?
It took me months of trying to heal myself from a chronic disease with food before I stopped. And I was a non-diet dietitian when I started eating for the sake of reduction in inflammation. Not recognizing at the time that stress is pro-inflammatory. And my stressing about food and eating would not make my non-nutritional disease any different, but certainly would make me feel worse. About myself.
I want to protect you from that experience. I want you to know that you are not alone and that you are trustworthy and that I am so grateful that you are here, sweet friend. I can help you eat with more ease. Let's do it.
