'Tis the Season

It’s not surprising that diet culture and fatphobic noise is louder now than it is during any other part of the year.

fa$la$la$la$la$la$la$la$la...
It is annoying.
It is frustrating.
It is not going anywhere.

But, neither am I.
Neither is my incredible community.
We are not going anywhere.
And are glad to be with you.

I catch myself on social media falling into a comparison trap. Holiday parties. Sequins. Glam. Excess. Gatherings of humans looking nothing but happy. Delicious and delightful looking food. And I know that I don’t actually KNOW anything about the people who are celebrating, or the challenges that they might be living with or through. But everything looks so festive, and because members of my family are no longer around, this season looks different for me than it has in the past. And because getting around is different than it has been, the season feels different than it has in the past.

I hope that your holidays are wonderful. And if they are not, that is okay, too. If you’re spending time worrying about the perfect gift, wanting to go to the mall, but being overwhelmed by crowds, if you are anxious about the holiday food and body talk forthcoming, know that you are not alone.

The holidays don’t feel great for everyone. You are allowed to experience the season in whatever way feels authentic to you. You are valuable, you are worthy, and your experience, whatever it is, is allowed.

Navigating this season can be really tricky. And costly. Diet culture wants your cash, not your happiness.

Protect yourself.

Know that self-protection and self-efficacy are allowed.

BOUNDARIES ARE PARAMOUNT.
